Analyse how particular techniques are used to encourage the viewer to form a positive or negative view of a character in visual text you have studied this year.

In Samson & Delilah Thornton uses the techniques of cinematography, props and lighting to encourage the viewer to form a negative view of Samson.

The first technique used by Thornton to encourage the viewer to form a negative view of Samson is cinematography. The particular aspect of cinematography used by Thornton is camera shots. Thornton uses a high-angled long shot of Samson after just leaving his village. Included in the shot is Samson in the foreground hunched over a can of petrol getting high and in the background is Samson’s village which he has just got exiled from after receiving a beating at the hands of his brother and has forced him to leave. This high-angled long shot of Samson looking down on his village forms a negative view of him to the viewer because it shows that he is turning his back on his culture and family. Samson turning his back on his culture means that his Aborigine culture and family must not mean a great deal to him and is not a good look to the viewer forming a negative view.

Props are also used by Thornton to form a negative view of Samson. The prop used to encourage this negative view is the can of petrol. This can of petrol is always associated with Samson, whether he is sniffing it getting high or feeling the effects. An example of how the can of petrol is always associated with Samson is evident in the opening scene. Samson awakes after a night’s sleep and the first thing he does before anything else is getting high of the petrol fumes still lying in bed. This scene shows how heavily Samson relies on getting high before he does anything else even getting out of bed. This forms a negative view of Samson to the viewers because in most developed countries around the world, drugs are taboo and not to mention illegal and people who use them are usually frowned upon by people in the community.

The last technique used by Thornton is lighting. Thornton uses lighting (or lack of it) when Samson is sniffing petrol. While Samson is doing this everything goes dark, lacks contrast and creates a dark atmosphere. This dark atmosphere created through lighting shows that doing drugs is a bad thing to be doing. Showing how lighting is used to encourage the viewer to form a negative view of Samson.

In Samson & Delilah Thornton uses the techniques of cinematography, props and lighting to encourage the viewer to forma negative view of Samson. This is because he is turning his back on his culture, is abusing and addicted to drugs and also is involved in illegal and illicit activities shown by the dark atmosphere created. All these activities are looked down upon by society so therefore viewers see Samson in a negative way.
